Empowering girls

What is going on?
In Malawi, more than 75% of girls in rural schools have no knowledge about menstruation and cannot afford sanitary pads. They use random materials like rags and leaves, which can cause infections. As a result, they miss a week of school each month during their period. This leads to learning gaps and school dropout.

Consequences
There are forced marriages at a young age, unwanted pregnancies, and complicated childbirths. The lack of sanitary pads prevents girls from completing school and working toward a better future. Additionally, there is a taboo on sexual education from schools, the government, and parents. As a result, these girls receive little information, making them vulnerable.

Fortunately, something can be done!
Tree of Life, together with local partner “Days for Girls,” organizes workshops at the Mitongwe Training Center. So far, 700 girls from the surrounding area have been reached. A great start, but there are still about a thousand more girls in need.

Workshop Content
During the workshops, girls receive education about the female body, sexual health, and how to manage menstruation. Each girl receives a kit containing washable menstrual underwear, soap, a washcloth, and a carrying bag.

Expected Results
Girls will no longer have to miss a week of school each month, creating more equal opportunities in education. Additionally, we aim to create a safe environment where girls know where to turn with their questions. In the long term, we expect a decrease in teenage pregnancies and an increase in the number of girls staying in school longer.

Costs
A complete workshop costs €1,875 for 125 girls.

This includes the kits with menstrual underwear, soap, a washcloth, and a carrying bag. This amount also covers payment to the local organization Days for Girls for producing the kits and conducting the workshop, including providing healthy snacks.
